Aston Martin commissioned a special series of 40 named and numbered editions of the V8 Vantage to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Aston Martin victories at Le Mans in the World Sportscar championship. The V8 Vantage Le Mans were available with either a 550 or 600 bhp twin supercharged 5.3 litre engine. One of the distinctive features included an extended front spoiler which was designed to create positive down force as an aid to high speed efficiency.
The Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring is one of the most iconic examples of Italian automotive design, famously named the «Flying Saucer» due to its space-age, aerodynamic shape.
Here is a brief breakdown of why it is so special:
- The Original (1952): Born during the height of the UFO craze, this was a series of experimental race cars designed by the legendary coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring. Its wide, rounded body was specifically built to cut through the wind, making it look unlike anything else on the road at the time.
- The Modern Revival (2012): Sixty years later, Touring Superleggera brought the name back. They took the «bones» of a modern Alfa Romeo 8C and hand-built a new, carbon-fiber and aluminum body over it. It isn't just a car; it's considered a piece of «rolling sculpture.»
- Why it Matters: It represents the peak of coachbuilding—the old-school art of creating custom, handmade bodies for cars. Because they are so difficult to build, very few exist in the world, making them highly prized by collectors.
In short: It is the perfect marriage of Alfa Romeo’s racing soul and Touring’s artistic elegance—a car built to be beautiful first and functional second.
